Somatic Therapy

Online in Florida and in-person in Stuart and Palm City, FL

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to psychotherapy that works directly with physical sensation, breath, movement, and nervous system experience.

It's built on the understanding that emotion, trauma and psychological distress aren't just stored as memories or thoughts; they're held in the body, often below conscious awareness, showing up as chronic tension, dysregulation, or disconnection.

Unlike talk therapy methods that prioritize cognitive understanding alone, somatic therapy allows us to literally feel differently in our bodies. We can access and change patterns that we may not even be able to verbalize.

We can’t talk our body out of feeling unsafe.

With somatic therapy, we can work directly with patterns like:

  • Chronic tension, like you’re braced for something terrible

  • Jumpy, on edge, constantly nervous

  • A feeling of being disconnected or shut down

  • A pervasive feeling that something bad is going to happen

  • The feeling that you and your body are not on the same team

These are all normal adaptations to chronic stress or trauma. It takes more than words to convince our nervous system that we’re safe. By working at the level of the body itself, we can reset the cycle and learn new ways to be in our bodies — and our lives.

How it works in session:

Instead of analyzing a problem from the outside, somatic therapy tracks what's actually happening in your body in real time. We might notice where a feeling lives, what a memory does to your breath or posture, or what your body wants to do that it never got to finish.

Talking is still part of the process — we’re just including the body in the conversation. We might do some movement, or breathing, or drawing, too, if you like. Many of my clients find it easier to process if we’re doing something physical at the same time.

We work at the pace of your body, rather than diving into overwhelming material all at once, building your nervous system's capacity to stay present and regulated as we go.

Over time, this builds a felt sense of safety and groundedness that talking alone often can't reach.

Somatic  therapy can help with:

  • Complex PTSD, developmental trauma, and single-incident (shock) trauma

  • Chronic stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation

  • Dissociation or feeling disconnected from your body

  • Psychosomatic symptoms — physical symptoms with no clear medical cause

  • Patterns that you “get” intellectually, but just can't seem to shift
